Visiting the Graves

On April 4, 2013, I drove to Perth Amboy, NJ for the second time. This time, I knew exactly where to find Alexander and Irene Kozub. They are buried at St. John The Baptist Orthodox Church Cemetery. My parents, my brother and my children joined me in the outing. For me, this trek was the culmination of a year's worth of research. It was important to me that we visit the graves of the first people that came to America in the Kozub family. Although we have no record of the sacrifices they made to come here, we can at least acknowledge that they existed.

This cemetary is clearly marked and well taken care of.

View from the front gate. Note that there is an additional larger section of the cemetary across the street.

Alexander 1856 to 1935 and Irene 1866 to 1942.

Me with my great-great grandparents Alexander and Irene Kozub.

My dad with his great grandparents Alexander and Irene Kozub.

Alexander and Irene's youngest son Anthony was buried here too, but we did not find his grave. However, we did take a picture of another Kozub grave. I haven't figured out who Michael and Anna Kozub are yet.

We also went over to Broad Street. I showed my family where Irene Kozub was living in 1942. (Along with her neighbors: brother-in-law Peter Kozub and nephew Alexander.) We also checked out the church they attended (on Broad Street) where Alexander was a cantor:

St. John the Baptist Greek Cathothic Church.

This building is across the street from the church. It says, "Greek Catholic Carpatho-Rusin Ben. Assn. Liberty"

I wonder what this building was used for. It was across the street from the church.

  1. Dear Tricia,
First, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Stephan Kozub, and I am the great-great-grandson of Peter Kozub, Alexander Kozub's brother. Over the past year, I have been working to fill in the gaps of the Kozub family tree, and I recently stumbled across this blog when searching for information. The info in it has helped me greatly, such as where the Kozubs were actually from, as it was previously unknown to my side of the family. I would like it if we might collaborate in the future regarding ancestry research, as I believe both of us could benefit from the info each of us have gathered. My email is sckozub@comcast.net, and I hope to hear from you soon.

    Sincerely,
    Stephan Kozub
